Artist Statement
With a subject matter varying from portraits, to landscapes and documentary, I primarily focus on everyday life and subjects which are often overlooked. The natural world is an important part of my work, looking into themes such as genius loci which can be shown in my series Spirit of Place, and decline which can be shown in my series Beachlands. I enjoy travelling to different locations capturing what makes them unique or using these locations for my environmental portraits. What ties my work together is my passion for the subject and my consistent way of researching using literature and imagery. I try to capture each subject in an empathetic way and not make any judgements too quickly which could be bias. Thinking about composition and the relationship between photographer and subject is important in my work. Each piece I create feels personal to me, I capture places and people I feel a connection to and use this to create a unique approach. Experimenting with different mediums has been a big part of my journey, I have come to especially love medium format film and the patient nature that film brings. Processing film at home has become an interest of mine as well as designing books and magazines as a form of displaying images. For my final major project at university, I decided to go back to my roots and capture my family and home. Life of the Home looks into our untraditional household and my unique connection to the people who occupy this place. It is an emotional and intimate project compiling of portraits of my parents, landscape, and still life, bringing up questions such as: Do objects have auras?
I am currently a practicing fine art and documentary photographer in the South East of England and available for commission.
